Frequently asked questions

Can acupuncture help with...?

The short answer is, "yes." For approximately 2000 to 2,500 years, acupuncture evolved alongside of dietary and herbal therapies, massage, and movement practices like Qi Gong as the primary medicine practiced throughout China. And so, it evolved to address every type of illness and syndrome and has continued to do so parallel to Western Biomedicine. Scalp acupuncture, for example, was developed using MRI mapping of the brain and is well documented to assist in stroke recovery and other neurologically based illnesses. Acupuncture is already well known in the US to help with pain, fertility, and substance addiction. More recently, Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT) has gained attention for its management of  allergen sensitivities such as Alpha-Gal Syndrome. Because of it's homeostatic nature, acupuncture can be a supportive complimentary medicine for most physical, mental, and emotional conditions.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

Generally, you can expect weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks. Reassessment of symptoms at each visit helps us to adjust your treatment strategy as we "peel back the onion." Typically, more acute problems resolve more quickly, and chronic problems resolve over time. Holistic lifestyle and dietary recommendations will be provided to facilitate the process. Once you are feeling better and your treatments are holding, we will discuss a realistic maintenance schedule to keep you on track. We can also continue to work on more longstanding or constitutional problems if you so choose.

What if I am afraid of needles?

If you haven't received acupuncture in the past, it is safe to say that all of the needles you have encountered have been hypodermic, or hollow, needles used in the medical setting to inject therapeutics or withdraw blood. They are much larger than the fine filiform needles used for acupuncture. If your are nervous, we will communicate and utilize strategies to help with distraction. Often, nervousness lessens with continued exposure and many people find that the benefit of each treatment far outweighs any remaining fear. Remember, we are a team and you have complete autonomy over your body.

Is acupuncture painful?

A momentary feeling of heaviness, tingling, dull aching, and tenderness at the point are considered a good sign that the needle is correctly placed and that Qi has arrived. Sharp pain, however, that lasts more than a few moments may indicate poor needle placement and should be reported to your practitioner so the needle may be manipulated or removed.

Do you take insurance?

I do not. I offer itemized receipts and some clients are able to deduct their medical expenses at the end of each year. I also gladly accept HSA and FSA cards for payment.
